It is estimated that 80% of all people will have an acne breakout at some point in their lives. Like many ailments that plague so many people, myths have developed over the years about what causes acne and the best way to treat it:
a) Acne is caused by dirt: Acne flare-ups cannot be traced to dirt or poor hygiene. In fact, washing too frequently or scrubbing too vigorously can irritate skin and make acne worse.
b) Eating chocolate and greasy foods causes acne: There is no proven connection between chocolate, pizza, potato chips, French fries, cheeseburgers, etc., and acne outbreaks. Recent research has indicated a link between acne and non-organic dairy products.
c) Stress causes acne: Stress does not cause acne to appear – but it can make it worse.
d) Popping pimples makes them go away sooner: Quite the contrary: Squeezing pimples and blackheads can lead to additional inflammation, infection and scarring.
Acne will go away on its own: Acne typically does not resolve on its own. Without treatment, acne can often progress and worsen.

As for prevalence, adult acne is more prevalent in women than in men, while in adolescents, the prevalence is quite similar in both sexes.
People of all ages can get acne, but it's most common in teenagers. But apart from these Hormonal changes during puberty or pregnancy, family history, greasy or oily substances or your skin comes into contact with oil or oily lotions and creams any friction or pressure on your skin can be caused by items such as telephones, cell phones, helmets, tight collars and backpacks can cause acne.
People of all races and ages get acne, but it is most common in teens and young adults. When acne appears during the teenage years, it is more common in males. Acne can continue into adulthood, and when it does, it is more common in women.
